Finding Affordable Housing
The need for safe, decent and affordable housing remains an ongoing challenge for the State of New York. This agency is committed to meeting this worthy challenge in comprehensive and innovative ways. The programs described below reflect our aim of advancing our housing goals for the benefit of our customers, the people of New York State.
DHCR funded sources of affordable housing:
- Affordable Housing Directory - Generate a map showing affordable housing in your area.
- Affordable Housing Projects Now Accepting Rental Applications - New affordable housing projects which are nearing completion and will soon be ready for occupancy.
- Community-Based Housing Organizations (NPC's/RPC's) - Many of these groups can assist you in finding affordable housing.
- State Supervised Middle Income Housing Developments - Find out which developments are currently accepting applications.
- HOME Local Program Administrators (LPA) - A List of local administrators providing rehabilitation and home purchase assistance to low-income households.

Rental assistance:
- Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program - Contact the Section 8 administrator in your area to see if you qualify for rental assistance.
- Senior Citizens Rent Increase Exemption (SCRIE) program - If you live in a rent controlled or rent stabilized apartment, are income eligible and 62 years of age or older this program may provide you an exemption from future rent increases. Additional information on the SCRIE program can be found in Fact Sheet 21 or by e-mailing RentInfo@nysdhcr.gov.

- Fannie Mae - Access the nationwide network of Fannie Mae-approved lenders.
- State of NY Mortgage Agency (SONYMA) - SONYMA offers a variety of homeownership programs for qualifying homebuyers.
- U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Rural Development - Rural homes for sale, as well as financing programs.
- U.S. Department Of Housing And Urban Development (HUD) - Tips For Buying A Home.
- GovLoans - Information about loans for housing, education, agriculture, disaster relief, small business, or veterans - all in one place, regardless of which agency sponsors the programs. GovLoans includes useful loan tools and resources such as FAQs, loan comparison charts, glossary terms and links to lender locators.
