Access to Home: Pathway to Independence

In New York State, the Division of Housing and Community Renewal has found a way to help our disabled neighbors regain their independence through a program called Access to Home. In both teeming cities and remote rural areas, disabled New Yorkers are receiving assistance to help modify their homes to promote their independence through a variety of adaptations and modifications. Their reclamation of independence has kept them in our communities and made us all richer and New York stronger.

This year's conference was held at the Marriott Marquis Times Square and Commissioner VanAmerongen was proud to deliver the keynote address. The commissioner discussed the work of DHCR and its partners during the past two years to face challenges in the market and find creative solutions to meet the affordable housing need in New York. Weatherization Day

The term Weatherization first appeared during the energy crisis of the 1970's and was used to describe the process of making the outer skin of a building better able to confront the harsh extremes of weather. The Weatherization Assistance Program, a Federal initiative created in 1976, provides States funds to weatherize homes of low income to lower their heating and energy costs. Since the 1976 inception of the New York State program, more than 486,900 homes have been weatherized.

What is Yolanda Garcia's legacy? That depends on whom you ask. To some, she was a tireless advocate for affordable, low-density housing in her Bronx neighbor-hood. For others, she spearheaded a movement for clean air, having lost a son to asthma. One thing is certain, when she died recently at the young age of 53, Yolanda Garcia left the world a better place than she found it.
